FEATURED ARTIST ON JUSTICE THROUGH MUSIC.org

A soulful voice, moving rhythms, and not afraid to speak out politically...sounds like an artist that JTMP loves to write about.

Kirsten Price, is a British-born artist currently living in New York. She has just come off of her "Tough Times" tour promoting her latest album, "Guts and Garbage", and is in the studio making her second album. We got a chance to talk to Kirsten and get her thoughts about artists using their music for activism.

Powerhouse Kirsten Price fuels a passionate Pittsburgh crowd Feb. 5, 2009, at Club Café

By Melanie Cox McCluskey
Published: February 8th, 2009 | 11:20am

Outside, a months-long deep-freeze left Pittsburgh frigid, but British soul songstress Kirsten Price heated things up on the cabaret stage of Club Café. Strutting and smirking, her tomboy-tough exterior belied the hushed vulnerability of her lyrics.

..In this intimate venue, Price’s potent stage presence made her a force to be reckoned with. Professional and passionate, she offered a fierce triumvirate of power riffs, power lungs, and power style.

Price sings sultry blues enhanced with contemporary rhythms, but her signature style — braless in a skimpy tank, cropped hair, ripped arms, bravura attitude — sets her apart from the other female divas of today’s pop radio.

Whatever It Takes: Kirsten Price

Montreal Mirror, Jan 29 - Feb 04 2009 Vil.24 No 32 -

Singer-songwriter Kirsten Price delivers musical relief during the economic downturn. When society stumbles into hard times and people are forced to start sacrificing, few things remain which most of us cannot go without. Booze and condoms first come to mind, but music can undoubtedly be added to the list. So in the midst of this global recession, U.K.-born, NYC-based singer Kirsten Price is embarking on her North American Tough Times ’09 Tour to address our collective anxieties and soothe them with some good ol’ soulful songwriting.

A child of an eclectic musical upbringing, from Chopin and Debussy to Chuck Berry and Prince, Price..sees herself as a jack of all trades but still clarifies that she is a singer first and foremost..

When she’s on stage, Price can comfortably jump from the piano, her oldest friend, to the guitar and even the bass, her latest crush. ~ (Full article) By Morgan Steiker

"I want more, more, more."

Washington Post Friday, January 23; Page WE08 - "I want more, more, more." Price sings with a scratchy, throaty sound that would make Fiona Apple jealous, but her booming voice has the dexterity and range of underappreciated R&B singer Nikka Costa.

Price's strength is her ability to alternate between the seductive and the saucy:..Like fellow British songstress Amy Winehouse, Price is at her best when she is at her most fiery. - Catherine P. Lewis

Jolly Good! Kirsten Price comes to BAM.

Brooklyn Courrier Jan 29, '09 By Meredith Delisso

Price can be likened to Ani DiFranco, except with more power, production and a better voice, and standouts from the diverse, instantly listenable "Guts and Garbage" include fan favorite "Magic Tree," showcasing the highs and lows of Price's sensuous voice, the heavier "5 Days Old," the airy love song "Fall," which Price just released a video for that was filmed in DUMBO, and "Crazy Sexy Beautiful," a fun romp that's full of personality which the artist is also working on a video for right now. Right now though, it's all about beating the recession depression with her tour, which represents a break from the-studio for Price, who is nearing completion of her second album and looks set to finish it shortly after she returns from I her cross-country expedition..

Female vocalists who can sing soul music are all the rage again.

- Biker Stuff, Tuesday Feb 17, 2009
"Guts & Garbage" .. is one of the most daring and hottest records to be released in 2008. Price mixes Soul, R B and Rock with ambition and raw sexuality that will melt speaker wires, warp amplifiers and probably require a cold shower when you're done listening...Kirsten Price isn't the next in a line of Soul/Pop vixens; she's the new face of Soul influenced rock music. Guts Garbage is more than its name, offering one of the most moving most exciting musical performances I've heard in some time. Kirsten Price is the sort of iconic voice and character the music industry's been waiting for. It's easy to imagine her, twenty years from now as the new Queen of Soul Music. For right now, she's creating on the most vibrant and exciting mixes of Soul, R B and Rock we've heard in many years. ~ Mick Mouse

Wildy's World Review: Kirsten Price - Guts & Garbage: An Instant Classic

Kirsten Price - Guts & Garbage
2008, KPI

Female vocalists who can sing soul music are all the rage again. Names like Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse, Macy Gray and Joss Stone sell CDs, MP3s and concert tickets by the boatload, but all have surrendered something of themselves to the music industry and its producers. London born and New York City based Kirsten Price brings the same kind of presence and big voice to the table, but Price eschewed the major label path to maintain total creative control over her material. Her debut album, Guts & Garbage is the true test of whether it's worked. Early returns suggest Price did the right thing. ~ Read more..
